A Special Diwali Calendar: A Little Passion Project

Every idea starts with a spark. For me, it came one evening while reading a Diwali book to my son, Akhil. As we turned the pages, I found myself wondering how I could make the festival come alive in our own home—something interactive, meaningful, and fun for kids.

That’s when the Diwali Calendar was born.

In India, Diwali is celebrated over five (sometimes six) days, each with its own traditions and significance. I imagined a mini calendar that would capture the spirit of those days in a way families everywhere could enjoy: simple descriptions to explain the meaning of each day, paired with a small treat or activity to spark joy. Many of the descriptions were adapted from National Geographic Kids, but the real magic comes from families adding their own traditions and stories as they celebrate.

What began as a small project for my own children quickly grew into something I wanted to share with others. The Diwali Calendar has become my way of blending creativity, culture, and connection—a passion project that I hope inspires families to create their own festive memories year after year.

This year’s calendar is especially meaningful because it brings together contributions from three incredible South Asian–owned businesses whose products add both quality and culture to the experience:

Day 1: Pyarful

Known for their beautifully designed rakhis and creative South Asian-inspired gifts, Pyarful adds a touch of modern tradition to the calendar.

Day 2: Ranavat

A luxury beauty brand rooted in Ayurveda, Ranavat’s products are a treat for the senses. Their brightening serum, gifted to me years ago, remains part of my cherished skincare routine.

Day 3: Rangoli Design

No Diwali is complete without a rangoli. This year, I designed a new pattern, with four tiles, family and friends can complete the design together.

Day 4: Element Truffles

Blending Indian flavors with artisanal chocolate, Element Truffles brings a delicious twist to tradition. Their unique combinations are as surprising as they are delightful.

Day 5: A Tilak-Inspired Surprise

A playful nod to tradition, created especially for the ladies and girls in the household.

The Diwali Calendar remains a small-batch, heartfelt creation—one that I lovingly prepare and send out each year. While I dream of growing “Versatiles by Bansari Shah” into something larger one day, for now, this remains a labor of love and is only available in limited quantities-.

My hope is that the calendar becomes more than just a countdown. I want it to be a tradition families look forward to—one that sparks curiosity, honors culture, and fills homes with the light of Diwali.

From my family to yours, wishing you a season of joy, togetherness, and new traditions.
